Ten-time Grammy Award winner Carlos Santana opened Game 2 of the 2017 NBA Finals with a rousing electric guitar rendition of the national anthem — one that ended up a little longer than expected.
The Bay Area native repeated the second stanza of the song, the one that begins with “Whose broad stripes and bright stars” before moving on to the bridge. The Oracle Arena crowd didn’t seem to notice or mind, and still loudly cheered as Santana wrapped up his performance.
The mishap might have gone unnoticed because Santana’s performance was entirely on guitar, with no vocal accompaniments. That made it less obvious than some other notable national anthem mistakes, like when singer Christina Aguilera flubbed the lyrics before Super Bowl XLV.
Santana has performed the anthem before Game 2 in Oakland each of the past three seasons. Patrick Monahan, the lead singer of Train, sang the anthem before the Warriors’ Game 1 win on Thursday night.
